Speech Therapy

Speech Therapy services address children who have concerns with their articulation (production of speech sounds), receptive language (how they understand language) and/or expressive language (how they express themselves), fluency (stuttering), and voice disorders (concerns with vocalizing).

Speech Therapy services may either be implemented within the regular classroom or in a pull-out setting in the speech room.  We work on our sounds, language, voice or fluency concerns by modeling, prompting, cueing, mirror work, etc.

There is a process to begin receiving speech services.  Once identified by a parent or a teacher, we first send home a consent for screening.  If the student exhibits a concern, the parents will be notified and our students must first receive interventions within the regular classroom to address their speech/language concerns.  After a period of intervention, if these concerns continue, we rescreen the student and begin looking at a referral while interventions continue.  These interventions and referral will be reviewed with the parents during an Admissions and Release Committe meeting, at which time the parents may choose for their child to be evaluated or they may choose not to have their student evaluated.

Once this decision is made, if an evaluation is to be completed, the student will be evaluated in the areas of need.  After the evaluation process, the committee will reconvene to determine if the student is eligible.  If a child is eligible to receive speech services, an Individual Education Plan will be developed by the committee and consent for services may either be accepted and signed or declined by the student's parent.

After this process, speech therapy services begin if parent consent is given..
