Highland Elementary Kindergarten students got the opportunity this week to help those affected by Hurricane Irma in Lake Wales, FL.  It all started when kindergarten teacher, Genelle Jones noticed on Facebook that some family members of a friend were going to help with cleanup efforts.  They reported that the residents of Lake Wales Florida are still without power and water.  They were asking for anyone willing to donate water.  Mrs. Jones got the Kindergarten classes involved by asking anyone who was interested in helping to send in water.  Involvement was very high and many participated by donating water, clothes, food, and diapers for those affected by the hurricane.  Teachers used this opportunity to teach students about weather (hurricanes) and empathy for others. They discussed what it would be like if they did not have power and water.  By making a personal connection, students were able to learn more about the world around them, as well as make a difference in the lives of those affected by this storm.
