MARKETING PROGRAM AT GHS
Marketing

The Marketing Program at GHS gives students an exposure to careers in the business and marketing fields. Students start the program during their freshmen year by enrolling in Principles of Marketing.  Following their freshmen year, they can branch into either of the two areas through a Career Pathway in Accounting or Marketing.  Completing of a Career Pathway will help students transition into collegiate level courses and have a better focus on their specific business major.

Part of the Marketing Career Pathway is The ADvantage Advertising Program.  ADvantage Advertising is a school-based enterprise that was formed as part of the marketing program at Glasgow High School.  It is a student managed business that airs school and community related stories on two local cable channels (EPB channel 21 and SCRTC channel 96).  The goal for ADvantage is to promote and highlight the activities of the Glasgow School system including classroom and extracurricular events as well as appropriate community events.  Staff members are responsible finding a story idea, filming the event footage, filming interviews, etc. then editing the footage.

The Bookstore is another part of the marketing program at GHS.  This is a student managed school bookstore that provides various school supplies for students and teachers as well as Scottie clothing.  Students are responsible for the complete management of the store, with oversite from the marketing teacher.

The Accounting Career Pathway provides on introduction to accounting principles.  Most colleges require business majors to complete two accounting courses as part of the admission requirements for undergraduate studies.  Accounting is currently a high demand field with numerous job opportunities available to accounting majors.

After enrolling in their first course in the Marketing Department students are eligible to join DECA.  DECA Club is a co-curricular nationally based organization.  DECA’s objective is to prepare “emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.” DECA members are eligible to participate in region, state, and national conferences at which they can compete in over 50 event areas.  Members can gain valuable experience by presenting before judges in their events. In fact, Lane Norris, a former DECA member, stated “My involvement in the DECA program as well as several accounting and business courses, have helped me excel in my business courses at WKU.”

Sam Richardson, a student majoring in finance at the University of Louisville, gained valuable experiences by taking several marketing and accounting classes at GHS. He states, “The marketing and accounting classes I took at GHS gave me an advantage in [my current] business classes. The GHS marketing/accounting program made my transition into college level courses an easy one.” The same sentiment is felt by Megan Shirley, who is currently attending Bellarmine University. Shirley feels she was given a solid base in accounting and business by taking those classes at GHS.
