AP CAPSTONE GRADUATION
AP Capstone

On August 9, 2017, eleven Glasgow High School students were honored at the AP Capstone Graduation ceremony. The AP Capstone Program, as described by College Board, is “an innovative diploma program that equips students with independent research, collaborative teamwork, and communication skills.” The program consists of two courses, AP Seminar and AP Research, which are currently taught at GHS by Mrs. Lisa Bartley and Ms. Mary Fye, respectively. The AP Seminar and Research Certificate is awarded to students who score a 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research.  Students who earn 3 or higher on both the AP Seminar and AP Research exams and on four additional AP classes of their choosing, receive an AP Capstone Diploma.  Ten GHS students recently received a Capstone diploma and one received a Capstone certificate.

When asked about the program, Fye stated, “The AP Capstone program provides students with numerous opportunities to learn and practice research and thinking skills they will need in college and beyond.?The AP Research course allows students to put to use the skills learned in AP Seminar as they carry out an independent research project.? The final Academic Research Paper has been compared to a Master’s Thesis or mini-Dissertation.”?

Garrison Page, a senior at GHS, completed the AP Research class last year and felt that it “taught [him] how to analyze previous studies for relevance and credibility.” Page further explained that he learned a great deal about time management and the importance of planning and meeting deadlines. Overall, Page felt that he benefitted greatly from the program and that he now feels better equipped on the format and construction of research papers, which will be valuable to him while attending college next year.

The AP Capstone program is in its fourth year of implementation at GHS (fourth year for AP Seminar and third year for AP Research) and currently there are 46 students enrolled in either AP Seminar or AP Research. In fact, the number of students enrolled in AP Seminar more than doubled this year as compared to last year. Both Mrs. Bartley and Ms. Fye are hoping that the number of diploma recipients will increase as the program continues to grow each year.
